When Celtic Inns Ltd purchased a derelict Manor House in 1980, few people could have imagined that it would become part of such a prestigious, internationally recognised development.

The vision came from the company’s chairman, Sir Terry Matthews, a highly successful entrepreneur who has invested £100m in the project. Sir Terry lives in Canada, where he founded two highly successful telecommunications businesses, Mitel and Newbridge Networks. However, he was born in the Manor House when it was a maternity hospital, and has strong family ties in the area.

THE TWENTY TEN GOLF COURSE - 18 hole, 71 Par, 7,493 yards

Designed by: Collaboration

Built to stage The Ryder Cup in 2010, the course opened for play in July 2007 at Celtic Manor Resort.  The first course to be built specifically for golf's greatest team tournament, it measures a robust 7,493 yards off the back tees and has a par of 71.

With water hazards on half of its holes, the course has six signature holes and presents many more memorable tests and risk-and-reward dilemmas. One of the features of the spectacular new course is its variety with many of the earlier holes having a links-like feel with some long rough and greenside swales, before the middle section of the course reveals the full extent of the lake-lined challenge.

A tough finishing stretch culminates in a real sting in the tail at the 18th.

THE ROMAN ROAD GOLF COURSE - 18 hole, 72 Par, 5,731 yards

Designed by: Robert Trent Jones Snr..

Roman Road, the first of the Celtic Manor Resort’s courses, opened in 1995 and was ranked ‘the top inland course in Wales’ by Golf Monthly Magazine.  Overlooking the Severn Estuary with views across to Somerset and Devon, it was designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr and is named after the many Roman roads that criss-cross it, the design shaped to avoid disrupting any remains.

The Roman Road course was the host venue in 2005, 2006 and 2007 for The Celtic Manor Wales Open and the 2005 and 2006 All*Star Cup which over the two years of the event has featured celebrities such as Catherine Zeta Jones, Michael Douglas, Ronan Keating, Chris Evans, Jodie Kidd, Bruce Forsyth, William Baldwin, Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, James Nesbitt and Jane Seymour.

THE MONTGOMERIE GOLF COURSE - 18 hole, 69 Par, 6,371 yards

Designed by: Colin Montgomerie.

Designed by Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie, the course measures 6,371 yards and has a par of 69. The front nine takes as its framework the starting and closing holes of the old Wentwood Hills championship course which were not part of the plans for the new course for The Ryder Cup. The back nine has been created from scratch on land that previously housed the 18-hole Coldra Woods academy course.

Throughout the new course, Montgomerie has put his own stamp on the layout. A traditionalist in design terms, the eight-time European No 1 has added deep pot bunkers to give the course a linksy look.

Spectacular views abound with dramatic tee shots over valleys and breathtaking downhill shots. Two long par fives, a number of short par fours and several testing par threes all add up to an exciting and rewarding challenge.

Long before the new Resort Hotel was built, the historic 19th century Manor House was recognised to be one of the finest hotels in the United Kingdom, winning the Egon Ronay award for the best hotel in Wales for five consecutive year’s.

Present owner Sir Terence Matthews acquired The Manor House in 1980, after it had been used for more than 30 years as a maternity hospital, the Lydia Beynon, where he himself was born.

The character of this lovely property has been retained and it now provides a total of 70 traditionally styled bedrooms, including three with four-poster beds.  In addition, The Manor House is home to The Patio restaurant, the Cellar Bar, Residents’ Lounge, Manor Bar, Hedleys, and The Manor Suite, and is a popular venue for weddings with its romantic country house ambience.

The Manor House is set in glorious landscaped gardens, with its own parking and direct access to The Resort Hotel.

Guests at The Manor House Hotel also enjoy complimentary telephone calls to national landlines, dial up internet access and complimentary use of The Forum Health Club leisure facilities.
