Surrounded by parkland in a curve of the River Tees, Rockliffe Hall promises peace, space and time to unwind. The 18th-century Hall and grounds have been carefully restored and extended to create a luxury hotel, spa and golf course; a 21st-century, country retreat. Rockliffe Hall's state-of-the-art spa, world-class golf course, three restaurants and sublime service ensure it is the perfect place to escape and relax on a golf break or Sunday Driver. Rockliffe Hall is nestled between the quiet villages of Hurworth and Croft on Tees in County Durham. Just five minutes from Darlington railway station, ten minutes from Durham Tee Valley Airport, fifty minutes from Newcastle International Airport and a world away from home.
Once a private home, the Hall has been skillfully converted to offer 21st-century luxury without losing the grandeur of its heritage. Rooms are large, light and welcoming, and mix contemporary furnishings with original features: stained glass windows, marble pillars, and beautifully ornate ceilings. Newer rooms reflect the original Hall in their size and elegance. “Rockliffe can host a Ryder Cup in the future, I’ve no doubts about that. It is one of the finest courses in the UK” Graeme Storm European Tour Professional.
Original plans for the hall date back to 1774, but it wasn’t until after the turn of the century that the hall and the estate started taking shape. Records from the1820’s list it as being known as Pilmore House. Then, the Pilmore Estate belonged to Robert Surtees of Redworth, the Co Durham Historian, and was habited – around 1836 – by his more famous cousin, landscape painter Thomas Surtees Raine.
In 1996, Rockliffe Park was bought by Middlesbrough Football Club were they established a new centre for its training facilities that matches its desire to be a top Premiership outfit challenging for major honours.
The estate has not been without incident. In 1903 and again in 1974, buildings were badly damaged by fire. In 1944 a light aircraft crashed into the grounds, luckily missing any buildings and causing only damage to trees and the landscape. It has even had its brush with stardom and parts of the grounds were used as backdrop for some scenes from the Michael Caine hit ‘Get Carter’ in 1971.

With one of Europe’s longest, and most challenging, golf courses – designed by Marc Westenborg; Golf Course Architect for the world renowned Golf Course Architecture firm, Hawtree Ltd. – golfing at Rockliffe is an exhilarating day out.
The courses has five different tee positions were beginners to hardened tour professionals can enjoy the test. Set on the banks of the River Tees, the 350-acre course features lakes, wetland and woodland to add to the experience.
The first hole has a well guarded opening green, with pot bunkers front and middle.
Beware the water off to the right.
A generous fairway allows you to open the shoulders for the first shot of the day. Water and fairway bunkers narrow the landing area here on the 8th hole were laying up short of these bunkers still gives you a chance of attacking the pin.
A large uphill fairway on the 9th holel eads to an elevated green. Beware of the severe slopes and bunkers, making this a particularly tricky green. At the turn the 10th hole is a long par four with the landing zone guarded on both sides by water. Bunkers protect the left of the green and a severe slope waits to gather all balls hit to the right.
The tricky 15th hole, Par 3, were water cuts in on your right, sand waiting on your left. The green is the only place to be on this hole. The 16th hole is a long and testing par 5 with a heavily guarded layup area. A solid second is required before your next shot to a tricky sloping green. The 18th hole presents a grand finish were large trees force you to play right of this hole. The final green is guarded by bunkers and slopes waiting to devour any tired, final shots.
“Rockliffe can host a Ryder Cup in the future, I’ve no doubts about that. It is one of the finest courses in the UK” Graeme Storm European Tour Professional.
The hotel's golf concierges take care of the details, parking your car, cleaning your shoes and clubs, thus ensuring you can concentrate on your game - and, at the 18th hole, walk straight off the course into the Spike Bar for a well-earned drink.
