The Old Course

Looking down the 18th fairway from the famous Swilcan Bridge remains golf’s most memorable and unique image and one guaranteed to set the pulse of any golfer racing. Standing there, you are part of the history of the oldest courses in the world, where the game was first played as long ago as 1400.

Host to 27 Opens, most recently in July 2005 – this original links course continues to evolve and remains a real test of golf for today’s champions as well as the many amateurs who play the course each year.

Despite its reputation and status, it is a public course and welcomes any golfer with a handicap of 24 or under (36 for ladies). Limited tee times are bookable in advance but most golf visitors play the course through the daily ballot for tee times.

The Dukes

Designed by: Peter Thomson

Despite the The Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa unrivalled position on the edge of the infamous 17th Road Hole of the Old Course, no hotel has privileged access to the Old Course for which St Andrews is so famous. As a five-star golf resort it is essential to be able to offer guests guaranteed tee times on a superb Championship course and the only way to do that was to build their own.

That decided, The Duke’s was carefully planned and designed to complement the five classic links courses along the coastline and to enhance St Andrew’s standing as the world mecca for golfers. Originally designed as the first heathland golf course in St Andrews, The Duke’s has matured to offer a magnificent 18 holes in the delightful surrounding of Craigtoun Park, a spectacular location overlooking the historic university town and Fife’s beautiful coastline.

Designed by Peter Thomson, five-times Open Champion of the 1950s and 1960s, The Duke's was revised and renovated, with five completely new holes, by Tim Liddy in 2006.  Tim's philosophy is one of allowing a golf course to 'grow out of the land' rather than be imposed upon it.  The course now displays all the hallmarks of the great heathland courses of the early 1920s.

The Duke’s was opened in July 1995 by HRH The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, who played an inaugural round with British Lions and Scottish Rugby Captain Gavin Hastings OBE.

The Hotel

The Old Course Hotel has been lavishly refurbished and features 144 beautiful rooms, including 35 stunning suites.  Twenty three of the suites have been completely redesigned with sumptuous interiors by star French designer Jacques Garcia – think rich, red, divine opulence.

The Old Course suites feature silk-lined walls, while many of the rooms have private balconies with picture-postcard views of the Old Course and the town of St Andrews. Many of the suites feature the distinctive Kohler bathroom products, including the Kohler chromatherapy (colour therapy) baths.

Eden Rooms at

The Eden Parkland Facing Bedrooms are an extremely spacious and luxuriously-appointed “home from home”. You won’t forget that you are in the majestic homeland that is Scotland, with the earthy, neutral tones of cream and brown, delightfully spiced up with the signature red that is used throughout the resort. The use of tactile textures are a reminder of Scotland’s rich heritage in the textile industry, with silk curtains, velvet furniture and a 100% plaid wool throw – designed by Monsieur Jacques Garcia no less – on the end of the bed. Gold and antique-style lamps add a touch of soothing glamour, while traditional images of St Andrews remind you that are indeed in the home of golf.

Old Course Rooms at

The Old Course Rooms, like the Eden Rooms, are an extremely spacious and luxuriously-appointed “home from home”. The main difference is the Old Course Rooms all have direct views of the Old Course. Most of our guests are immediately drawn towards the window - for this is one of the most spectacular views in the world – and find they spend much of their time rooted to this spot.

The Fairway Suites are a wonderful contrast to the Old Course Suites; with their contemporary, airy and minimalist feel. The Fairway Suites are housed in the Millennium Wing of the resort, which was launched in 2000. Every single Fairway Suite has a magnificent view of the Old Course and the Fife coastline that stretches for miles and miles.

These Suites are vast, with an extremely spacious separate lounge containing a WC and mini-kitchen, a large bedroom and large bathroom with a separate walk-in shower and bath facilities.

The Jigger Inn

Jigger Inn

This historic building is steeped in history. It dates back to the 1850s, when it was the station master’s lodge and the history and heritage live on. A must visit for any golfer.

Today, the Jigger Inn is home to golfing memorabilia, crackling open-hearth fires, home-cooked food and a superb selection of Scottish beers – this is traditional Scottish pub hospitality at its very best.

You’ll find many caddies enjoying a pint after a long game of golf, and many golfers intent to hear all the gossip, which – needless to say - revolves around the game!
