Wales National Golf Course

The award winning Wales National Golf Course is destined to be one of the greatest UK inland golf courses; mature woodland, fearsome bunkers, tricky water features and USGA standard greens combine to make a challenging round of golf.

The Wales National is a UK golf course of distinction, one of the UK and Europe's newest championship golf courses and - at 7,433 yards off the championship tees - it's one of the longest golf courses outside of the USA.

The golf course boasts some of the UK's finest scenery, a mixture of mature wooded areas, wide and narrow fairways and vast water and bunker features, all set in the spectacular countryside of Wales, with its abundance of wildlife including badgers, swans, rabbits and hawks.

The par 73 Wales National golf course, opened in June 2003 by Great Britain Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave, has already played host to several European Challenge Tour and Seniors Tour events as well as some for the Europro Tour. The golf course was also the venue for the Sky-televised FIRSTPLUS Wales Seniors Open and SWALEC Wales Challenge.

Golf World magazine rates its 16th hole as one of the top 10 par 4s in UK golf, whilst the 2nd hole is the longest par 5 in Wales.

Lake Course

One of two exceptional UK golf courses at the Vale Resort, the well-established and aptly named par 72 Lake Course – which has staged numerous Wales and West PGA professional championships - is dominated by a 20-acre lake and has water coming into play on 12 of its holes. Its 8th hole looks down over the largest heronry in Wales.

Its unique signature hole, The Island Green (12th), is ranked one of the UK's top golf holes. This is definitely a fine golf course layout in its own right and is highly regarded for natural beauty.

Great food is there to be enjoyed; it should not be complicated or over fussy. The classic recipes served at the Vale Grill are quite simple: it is the freshness and quality of the ingredients combined with the inventiveness of the chefs that make the difference.

At the Vale Grill, our award winning AA Rosette restaurant, you will find a menu that reflects the very best in British and Welsh cooking. Local produce is imaginatively prepared, cooked to perfection and served by attentive yet unobtrusive staff - includes the tastiest Welsh Black Beef, succulent Welsh Lamb and delicious freshly made desserts.

Many tables in the Vale Grill afford views over the Lake Course, and when weather permits, guests can take advantage of the terrace and dine al fresco.

You will never be at a loss for something interesting to see or do in and around Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, and the Vale Resort is the perfect hotel location for you to take advantage of all that South Wales has to offer.

There is an ever-increasing choice of attractions to visit and the proximity to the coast and mountains means that Cardiff really does have something for everyone.

South Wales is dotted with castles; most notable the stunningly elaborate Cardiff Castle located in the centre of the city. On the northern edge of Cardiff, set in the wooded hillside, is the fairytale Castell Coch (Red Castle), once the summer residence of the Marquis of Bute who made his fortune from the 'black gold' (coal). A few miles to the north of Cardiff the imposing Caerphilly Castle dominates the Caerphilly townscape.

Cardiff and the South Wales valleys has a rich cultural and industrial heritage, vividly depicted by a wealth of award winning attractions, not least of which are the Rhondda Heritage Park, a former coal mine recreating a grueling underground life while the Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans is one of Europe's leading open-air museums, a living village representing Wales through the ages.

And of course, no article about the attractions of South Wales is complete without mentioning the Millennium Stadium! Set in the heart of Cardiff City centre the Millennium Stadium is not only the home of Welsh rugby, it also plays host to a variety of live entertainment.
