Formby Golf Club is aptly regarded as a classic British links and is worth playing on a golf tour to England's Golf Coast. Ranked in the top 80 golf courses in the World!

You are here: Home| Englands Golf Coast| Formby Golf Club

Formby Golf Club is aptly regarded as a classic British links and it is situated among sandhills and pinewoods some 14 miles north of Liverpool and five miles south of Southport, it is a course of contrasts. The opening holes beside the railway differ markedly from the subsequent holes built among sand dunes. The stretch out at the far end, close to a bird sanctuary, is particularly appealing, not least because on a good day from the 9th and 10th tees the visitor can see the Welsh mountains to the south west. Memorable, too, are the course’s excellent par-3s which are among the most challenging to be found anywhere.

Formby might well be the most attractive course on England’s Golf Coast, locals suggest it’s the best links golf course not to have held the Open. It has hosted many important events, including three Amateur Championships, most recently in 1984 when Spaniard, José-Maria Olazábal, defeated Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie 5 & 4. This gem of a course, whilst basking in the shadows of its illustrious Royal neighbours, is proud of its position as one of the top
amateur golf courses in the UK. A visit to the Golf Coast is incomplete without having had the Formby experience.

Formby Golf Club

Founded in 1884, a group of 24 local businessmen founded Formby Golf Club in 1884.  As was usual in those early days in England, golf was played over a 9 hole course during the winter months between October and mid-April.  Formby was open to Members and their friends and Ladies, who were relatives of members.

The land, which was part of the Warren and rented from a tenant farmer at £10 per season, lay between the recently extended railway to Southport (1851) and the sand dunes and followed the pattern of golf course design created at St Andrews and Westward Ho! and the earliest local course of West Lancashire (1873).

The original 18 hole course was redesigned by the famous Willie Park and a plan of the course (dated 1912) is displayed in the Hall Bar.  Alongside is the 1994 plan showing the changes that have taken place in the intervening years.

James Braid changed the original 15th - 18th layout in 1922 to provide extra length and to move the 17th when it was realised that Shireburn Road and the houses were to be constructed to its right.  A stand of conifers was planted, some of which remain today.

Minor changes were introduced by Messrs Hawtree & Taylor in 1933, but the latest major change took place in the early 1970s.

Formby Golf Club is one of the classic courses of the Lancashire coastline. Although somewhat protected from the elements by pine trees that line several of the holes, the course is a tough one, particularly when the wind does break through. Such is the profusion of wildlife and plants at Formby that it has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest with the magnificent, fragile dunes a designated conservation area.

The club is unique in Britain for within the boundary of its own course is the completely independent Formby Ladies Golf Club, which was founded in 1896. Formby Golf Club, founded two years earlier in 1884, are proud to have an outstanding amateur championship course with par 3s amongst the most challenging to be found anywhere.

The course is in good condition all year round, the greens are firm and the undulating fairways excellent. However, accuracy and concentration are prerequisites for every hole, with the heather and rough forming a natural boundary together with bunkers and sandhills, it does not serve the golfer to be unfocused.

Signature Hole

Hole 6: 402 Yards, Par 4

Regarded as an extremely challenging hole, the major problem confronting the golfer is a completely blind second shot to the bunkerless green.

The approach is deceptive - the pin is nearly always farther away than it looks over its ridge of sharply undulating sandhills. The drive must be held as close as possible to a giant sandhill on the left edge of the fairway to allow the best chance of hitting the green with the second. Yet that secretive green still provides the make-or-break point of the hole - find it and putt well for a hard-earned par.
